Capacity means food plus ice

YETI's Tundra FAQ distinguishes external size from usable capacity and recommends allowing substantial space for ice. Its packing guidance uses a two-to-one ice-to-contents ratio by volume for best performance. That is the manufacturer's guidance for its products, not a universal packing requirement for every cooler.

Our practical check is to lay out the drinks, food containers and ice packs you intend to bring. Compare their dimensions with the interior, not just the exterior footprint or the number in the model name. Can-count claims may use different amounts of ice. A cooler that holds your containers only when no cooling material is included is the wrong size for that load.

Test the lift before paying for more space

Our starting preference is a smaller carried cooler when the walk is a large part of the trip, and a hard cooler when it will spend most of the day in one place. Confirm that preference against actual specifications. Some insulated soft coolers are bulky; wheels on a hard cooler do not eliminate the lift into a trunk or over stairs.

Measure the vehicle opening and storage space at home. Try the handles with a representative load when possible, and check whether the lid opens in the intended position. For a shoulder or backpack model, pay attention to strap adjustment, pressure and access while loaded. An extra-large cooler is poor value if you repeatedly leave it behind because moving it is a chore.

Compare cooling claims under the same conditions

YETI explicitly notes that ice retention depends on the quantity and type of ice, outdoor conditions and sunlight, and that fixed day-count claims may reflect test conditions rather than a real trip. Its packing guidance recommends pre-chilling the cooler and its contents. Opening frequency and packing practice are worth considering before assuming a more expensive box will solve everything.

When comparing independent tests, look for matched loads, ambient temperature and opening schedules. An ice-retention result does not by itself prove food remained at a safe temperature. We have not run that testing, so this guide does not promise a number of cold days. Choose a size and carrying format first, then look for credible model-level evidence.

The closure and care details can settle the choice

Waterproof fabric does not necessarily mean the complete cooler is leakproof, and a strong-looking lid does not establish what happens when it tips over. Read the closure specification for the exact model and keep it upright unless the manufacturer supports another use. Try opening and closing it with the load in place; easy access matters when it is opened repeatedly.

Inspect corners, seams, drain access and the space needed to dry the cooler after cleaning. Check replacement-part support rather than assuming all parts can be swapped. Dry ice requires a separate compatibility check: YETI warns against using it in Hopper soft backpack coolers because pressure can cause an explosion. Never transfer compatibility from a different model. For ordinary outings, choose the water-ice or ice-pack setup the manufacturer supports.

  1. Lay out the full contents with room for the intended ice or packs.
  2. Compare internal dimensions and empty weight, not just can count.
  3. Check the loaded carry, vehicle opening and lid clearance.
  4. Inspect closure, cleaning and drying access, and replacement parts.
  5. Treat ice-retention claims as conditional and follow exact-model cooling-material instructions.
