Is the reading cramped, the computer always at 4 percent, the video call awkward, or the desk too crowded for the notebook?

Write down the interruption before buying anything. A student who cannot see a spreadsheet and a lecture at once has a display problem. Someone who carries a charger between rooms has a power and cable problem. A student who sounds fine but appears as a dark silhouette has a light or camera placement problem. Those are different purchases, even when every shopping page calls the answer a setup upgrade.

If the screen is the bottleneck, check the computer first

An external monitor can make a two-window assignment less irritating, but the computer decides what will actually work. Apple says the number of displays a Mac can use depends on the Mac model and the display resolution and refresh rate. Its connection guide also calls out the unglamorous part: identify the ports, confirm the cable, and use an adapter only when the computer and display require different connections.

Chromebook support makes the same point in plainer language. Find the output on the Chromebook and the input on the monitor, then choose the adapter between those two ports. If a USB-C connection produces a “cable may not support displays” message, Google says the cable speed may be insufficient. Read the exact laptop and monitor documentation before ordering a dock. Choose a dock after identifying the connection you need.

The useful school purchase is often one screen at the correct resolution with the correct cable. Do not pay for a multi-monitor plan until the computer's own display limit and the student's actual desk have survived measurement.

If the cable pile is the bottleneck, separate power from data

USB-C looks like one standard until a screen, charger, storage drive, and laptop are all involved. USB-IF says certified USB-C-to-USB-C cables carry 60W or 240W power markings, and that cables other than USB 2.0 also need a data-rate marking. That gives you two questions to ask. Can this cable deliver the power the computer needs, and can it carry the display or data connection the setup needs?

Those answers are related, but they are not the same answer. A cable can be adequate for charging and still be the wrong cable for a monitor. A cable can have a high power marking and still be unsuitable for the data rate you expect. Keep the laptop model, monitor model, and the intended connection in the same buying note. It is less exciting than a giant accessory bundle, which is why it works.

If video calls are the bottleneck, buy for the frame

A camera upgrade only helps if it can sit where the student's face is visible and the cable reaches the computer. Logitech's current C920s product page lists 1080p at 30 frames per second, a fixed 78-degree field of view, autofocus, stereo microphones, a USB connection, and a privacy shutter. Those are useful facts for a compatibility check. They are not proof that every lecture platform, room, or network will produce the same result.

The practical decision is physical. Measure the distance from the monitor or laptop to the place the camera would sit, identify whether the computer has the required USB port or needs an adapter, and check whether a 78-degree frame includes the background you are willing to show. If the problem is a backlit window, moving the desk or adding light may solve more than a new sensor. If the problem is privacy, a shutter is a concrete feature worth checking.

Make the purchase pass a normal school day

Before the return window closes, reproduce the actual sequence: open the school portal, join a call, connect the display, charge the laptop, and put the required notebook somewhere reachable. Confirm that the cable reaches without crossing the chair, that the monitor input can be selected without a scavenger hunt, and that the new device does not consume the only outlet needed for the old one.

If nothing in that sequence was failing, keep the money. If one step fails every day, buy the smallest piece that removes that step and update the setup notes with the exact model and cable. The first weeks of use give you a specific problem to solve.
