Buy the floorhead before the feature list

Write down the surfaces in your home: hard flooring, short rugs, thicker carpet, and anything with fringe or special care instructions. A single claim about suction does not tell you whether a tool is appropriate for all of them. Check the flooring maker's care guidance, then the vacuum's exact accessory list. Similar-looking bundles may include different heads.

Miele's accessory catalog illustrates the distinction: it lists dedicated parquet brushes, turbo brushes, and electric carpet brushes for different uses. That does not mean every Miele canister can power every electric brush. Ask about the complete connection path, including hose and wand, before treating an optional head as an inexpensive future upgrade. For a mixed-floor home, rehearse how often you would change tools and where the spare would live.

Read runtime in the configuration you will use

An 'up to' battery figure needs its footnote. Miele's Duoflex listing, for example, specifies its longest runtime without the powered Multi Floor brush at minimum power, and a much shorter maximum-power figure with that brush on hard floors. Those are different operating conditions. Use this as a reason to inspect the candidate's runtime table, not as a comparison between brands.

Time a normal cleaning session with your present vacuum. Separate actual vacuuming from moving chairs and picking up toys. Compare that work with the proposed battery configuration, charging time, and whether a replacement battery is sold for the exact model. Dyson advises using its lower-power everyday modes for routine cleaning and reserving stronger modes for concentrated tasks. If the machine only satisfies you in its highest setting, its lower-power headline runtime is not your working budget.

Try carrying, steering, and putting it away

Ask to handle the candidate with its normal floorhead attached. Move it around a chair, reach under furniture, lift it into the position needed for stairs, and operate the bin or bag compartment. Total weight alone cannot tell you how the handle feels in your hand or how awkward the body will be on your staircase.

Measure the storage location before ordering. A cordless dock needs its specified mounting or standing arrangement and a practical charging outlet. A canister needs room for its body, hose, wand, and accessories. Sketch the entire stored machine, not just the motor housing.

Make maintenance part of the purchase

Build a small ownership list: bags if used, filters, brush parts, and a battery if replaceable. Check availability by model number and read the maintenance instructions before assuming a filter is washable. Dyson's cordless filter guidance requires thoroughly drying washed filters for at least 24 hours before refitting. That matters if this will be your only vacuum and you expect to use it again immediately.

Finally, name the problem the purchase must solve: quicker kitchen cleanup, finishing carpeted rooms, easier carrying, or reaching under a bed. If cleaning the current tool, replacing a consumable, or moving the vacuum nearer its main job solves that problem, keep using it. A second machine makes sense when it takes on a distinct job you will actually do more often; it also creates another item to store and maintain.
