Before buying a robot vacuum, check the route it has to clean

Consider a robot when you can give it a repeatable, reasonably clear route and want frequent floor cleaning between manual jobs. Choose the dock and mopping features around your floors and upkeep routine. Keep your current vacuum for jobs the robot cannot reach.

Walk the route before comparing suction figures

Trace a route through the rooms you want cleaned. Measure furniture clearance, narrow chair gaps, and each doorway transition. Note loose cords, rug edges, floor-length curtains, and places where objects regularly accumulate. Compare those observations with the exact robot's published limits; a clean, empty showroom floor is not a substitute for this survey.

Roborock's Qrevo Pro manual explicitly calls for removing cords and valuables before a run. Plan for that preparation even when another candidate advertises obstacle recognition. Your return-window check should be supervised: confirm it crosses your normal transitions, enters the rooms that matter, and returns to its dock without repeated intervention. Do not deliberately test stairs or other hazards. Follow the model's physical-barrier and safety instructions.

Measure the dock as a working appliance

Mark out the dock's footprint with paper, including the approach clearance in its manual. Then check the space above and around it to remove tanks, lift a lid, change a dust bag, and clean the base. Avoid choosing a cabinet simply because the closed dock fits inside it. For the Qrevo Pro, the manufacturer specifies a flat location and warns that soft surfaces can interfere with docking.

A washing dock changes the chore rather than eliminating it. Decide who will carry clean and dirty water, where the tanks can be rinsed, and whether that route is convenient enough for regular use. Roborock lists automatic dust emptying, mop washing, and drying for several Qrevo models, while its comparison shows that hot-water washing and other functions differ. Confirm the exact dock in the bundle instead of assuming a shared family name means identical equipment.

Treat mopping and rug protection as separate decisions

Check the floor manufacturer's permission for damp cleaning before buying a mopping feature. Then ask what happens when the route reaches carpet: does the robot avoid it, lift a wet pad, require a different bin, or leave pads at the dock? Those arrangements have different implications for a home with scattered rugs.

For example, the Roomba Combo i5 manual describes a bin swap for mopping. Roborock's Qrevo 2 Pro page describes automatic mop removal at the dock before carpet cleaning. Neither example establishes what an unrelated model does. For your candidate, check supported carpet types, available no-mop controls, and whether its route can reach all the hard flooring without an unwanted pass over a rug. Skip the mop feature if your floor care rules or layout leave little useful work for it.

Read the upkeep and app requirements now

Look up replacement brushes, filters, pads, and dock bags by model number. The Roomba Combo i5 manual, for example, lists ongoing brush, sensor, and filter care and says its filter must not be washed. A robot needing that attention is not defective simply because it is sold as automatic. Put the schedule beside your existing cleaning routine and decide whether the trade is worthwhile.

Check which controls are available on the machine and which require an app, account, or network connection. Verify the Wi-Fi requirements in the current setup instructions; the Qrevo Pro manual specifies 2.4 GHz. If a candidate has a camera or remote viewing, read the related privacy and account controls before enabling it. During the return period, judge the machine by completed useful runs and minutes of intervention. If the setup routine takes away the time you hoped to save, a simpler vacuum may fit better.

Measure furniture gaps, transitions, and the complete dock service area.
Check the model's instructions for cords, stairs, barriers, and delicate flooring.
Confirm the exact carpet and mop behavior for every rug on the route.
Find consumables and read the cleaning schedule before buying.
Check app, account, Wi-Fi, camera, and offline-control requirements.
Use supervised normal runs to assess coverage and intervention during the return window.
