Choose mesh when several rooms need one managed network and the nodes can be placed with a usable wired or wireless path between them. First try moving the existing router or wiring the problem room when only one location is affected.

Name the problem before adding nodes

Walk the same route with the same device and record where the connection becomes unreliable. Test near the router, in the problem room, and beside the intended node location. A dead zone at the far end of a house is a coverage question; a slow connection beside the router may be a client, interference, or service-plan question.

Move the existing router into the open and away from large obstructions before buying hardware. If one desktop, television, or game console is stationary, a cable is usually a more direct diagnosis: it removes the radio hop for that device. Mesh is a network layout decision, not a universal speed upgrade.

Two real systems, two different tradeoffs

The eero 6+ is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 system. eero lists two auto-sensing gigabit Ethernet ports, 160 MHz channels, support for use as a gateway or extender, and a requirement for its iOS or Android app during setup and management. Its published coverage figure is up to 1,500 square feet per device and its device figure is 75-plus; treat those as the manufacturer’s planning claims, not a guarantee for your walls or client mix.

The TP-Link Deco XE75 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E system. TP-Link lists 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz radios, three gigabit ports per unit, optional Ethernet backhaul, and router or access-point operation. The product page advertises up to 7,200 square feet for a three-pack and up to 200 devices; the useful distinction is the extra 6 GHz band and the available wired ports, not the headline area. A 6 GHz feature helps only clients and placements that can actually use it.

Backhaul decides whether the extra node helps

A node needs a path back to the gateway. With wireless backhaul, the node and client share airtime and the result depends on placement, walls, neighboring networks, and the client’s band. Put the node where it still receives a healthy signal from the gateway, not in the room that has no signal at all. That placement may mean the node is halfway between the gateway and the problem room.

Ethernet backhaul changes the tradeoff. The cable carries traffic between nodes, so the node’s radio can concentrate on clients. The switch, wall jack, and cable path still need to work, and a gigabit port is a limit for traffic that traverses it. If the only practical fix is one wired room, compare a single access point or an Ethernet adapter with a whole mesh kit.

A no-buy path is a valid result

Do not buy a three-pack to solve one room until you have tried router placement and a wired connection. Do not use a mesh kit to compensate for an internet plan that is slower than the speeds you want, or for a client whose radio cannot use the advertised band. If the current gateway must remain in place because of the ISP, ask whether it can be put in bridge mode or whether an access point is the safer addition; confirm the exact instructions before changing it.

If you do buy, decide the node count from a floor plan and power locations, then keep the receipt. Recheck roaming, wired devices, sleep and wake, and the farthest room during the return window. The published documents establish features and compatibility. They do not establish your home’s throughput, latency, or long-term reliability.

Before you buy

  1. Test the same client at the gateway, the problem room, and the proposed node location.
  2. Move the existing router into an open, central position before adding hardware.
  3. Decide whether wireless or Ethernet backhaul is realistic in each node location.
  4. Check the exact client devices that can use Wi-Fi 6 or 6 GHz; do not pay for a band no client can use.
  5. Confirm whether setup requires an app, an account, or a change from your ISP gateway’s current mode.
  6. During the return window, test roaming, stationary wired devices, sleep and wake, and the farthest room.
