Replace a router when it lacks a required WAN or LAN capability, no longer receives needed updates, or cannot provide the network mode and controls you need. A larger Wi-Fi number alone is not a reason to replace a working router.

Start with the service and client path

Write down the advertised internet tier, the modem or ONT port, the router WAN port, the client’s Wi-Fi generation, and every wired link between them. A router with a high aggregate Wi-Fi label cannot make an internet plan faster, and a Wi-Fi 6 access point cannot make an older client negotiate a Wi-Fi 6 link. A single laptop’s result is also not the same thing as total household capacity.

Test beside the router, then test one wired device if possible. If wired service is near the plan’s expected range but Wi-Fi is poor in one room, investigate placement or an access point. If the wired result is already below the plan, check the modem, cable, port negotiation, and ISP before shopping.

What the named candidates actually provide

TP-Link’s Archer AX55 page identifies a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with a published 2,402 Mbps 5 GHz rate and 574 Mbps 2.4 GHz rate, plus one gigabit WAN and four gigabit LAN ports. It also lists router and access-point modes. That makes it a reasonable candidate when the entire path is gigabit-class and your requirement is straightforward coverage and routing, subject to regional hardware version and firmware support.

ASUS lists the RT-AX86U Pro as a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with a configurable 2.5G/1G port, four gigabit LAN ports, and router, access-point, repeater, media-bridge, and AiMesh-node modes. ASUS also documents the 2.5G port as usable for WAN or LAN. It is one shared configurable port, not two simultaneous 2.5G ports. That flexibility matters only if a modem, switch, or local device can use it; it does not turn a gigabit service plan into multi-gig service.

Do not confuse Wi-Fi rate with throughput

The numbers printed beside AX or AXE are radio link-rate categories. They depend on channel width, spatial streams, client support, signal conditions, and other traffic. ASUS explicitly qualifies its quoted network speeds as based on current IEEE 802.11ac and 802.11ax specifications. Read the number as a capability clue, then verify the client and upstream path before treating it as a buying requirement.

A 2.5G WAN port is useful when the service handoff and router configuration can deliver more than a gigabit. A 2.5G LAN port is useful for a compatible local device or switch. If either endpoint is gigabit, that link remains gigabit. For multiple high-demand clients, the topology and wired uplinks matter as much as the router’s radio label.

Choose the smallest change that fixes the diagnosis

Keep the current router when its ports and security updates cover the need. Move it or add a wired access point when the problem is one distant room. Consider a mesh system when several rooms need coordinated roaming; use the mesh guide to compare that layout. Replace the gateway when you can name the missing capability, such as a 2.5G handoff, access-point mode, or a required security feature.

If an ISP gateway remains in routing mode, adding a second router can create double NAT and complicate inbound services or device discovery. Ask the ISP for bridge or passthrough guidance, or use the new device’s access-point mode when that is the supported design. Check the exact manual and return terms before changing the network you rely on.

  1. Record plan speed, modem or ONT port, router WAN/LAN ports, and the client device’s Wi-Fi support.
  2. Run a wired test near the gateway before blaming the wireless radio.
  3. Treat AX or AXE labels as link capability, not a promised internet speed.
  4. For multi-gig, verify the service handoff, router port mode, switch, cable path, and client port together.
  5. Decide whether router mode or access-point mode fits the ISP gateway topology.
  6. Check the exact regional hardware revision, firmware support, app requirements, and return window.
