Name the target signal first

Do not shop from the phrase HDMI 2.1 alone. Write down the result you want: 4K at 60Hz, 4K at 120Hz, VRR, ALLM, HDR, or a particular audio format. HDMI's own feature guidance separates these capabilities, and product implementations can expose only some of them. The TV manual and the source-device manual are the authority for the exact port and mode.

A PlayStation 5 is a useful concrete example: Sony says the console supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120Hz output, but it also tells users to check whether the TV claims 4K/120, use the appropriate HDMI port, update firmware, and use the included or Ultra High Speed cable. That is an end-to-end requirement, not a promise that every port on every TV does the same thing.

Count the real ports and the middle boxes

Make a list of every source: console, PC, streaming box, disc player, receiver, soundbar, and capture device. Then draw the physical order of the connections. A TV may have several HDMI sockets but reserve its highest-bandwidth or eARC feature for specific ports. A receiver, switch, or capture device in the middle can also limit the signal even when the TV and console support it.

For a new 4K/120 console path, start with the console directly connected to the TV's documented compatible input. Once that works, add the receiver, switch, or capture device one piece at a time. Keep the spare port count in the decision: a TV that technically supports the feature may still be awkward if the one suitable input is occupied by another device.

VRR and ALLM are features to verify, not decorations

HDMI describes Variable Refresh Rate as allowing a graphics processor to present frames as they are rendered, which can reduce stutter and tearing when the source and display support it. Auto Low-Latency Mode lets a source signal the display to switch into a low-latency mode. Sony's PS5 guide says VRR and ALLM depend on a compatible TV, the correct settings, and supported games or output conditions.

Check the exact TV input menu after connecting the source. Record the console's reported resolution, refresh rate, VRR state, and HDR state. A cable can carry a lower mode and still look functional, so the presence of a picture is not proof that the requested 4K/120 or VRR path is active.

Route audio deliberately

Enhanced Audio Return Channel is a TV-to-audio path, not a gaming frame-rate feature. HDMI says eARC supports advanced audio formats and device control. If the console goes into the TV, connect the soundbar or receiver to the TV's documented eARC port and confirm the TV's audio-output setting. If a receiver handles the console first, verify that receiver's video and audio limits before assuming the TV is the only constraint.

After installation, test a game with headphones or speakers, a streaming app, and a console menu. Check for lip-sync, audio dropouts, volume control, and whether the TV falls back to ARC or stereo. Save the working cable and port map so a later firmware update or rearrangement can be diagnosed without guessing.
